It is quite normal for video games to go through changes during development. Not everything works out as planned, but what’s uncommon is changes in the story. Well, it looks like that’s exactly what happened with GTA 6. After the latest leak, we’ve got answers on why the game took so long. Some details about previous iterations of GTA 6 came out, revealing a dark tone originally in the story! So, without wasting much time, let’s check out the leak in detail.
Who’s The Leaker?
Well, first up, the important question that needs to be asked is, who is the leaker? Given all the fan speculations and rumours floating around on the internet, it becomes quite easy for fake news to spread. As for this leak right here, it does seem to be reliable. Originally, a post was made on Medium by a French Reporter called “Fravilys” who claims to have internal sources.
Right after that, the popular X account GTA 6 Countdown made a dedicated thread discussing everything he learnt from the post. Given that the source article is in French, the X account translated the post and marked the highlights. But the source does seem to be reliable based on his previous leaks. So let’s now take a look at everything we know from the post!
Original Story of GTA 6
The leak states that GTA 6’s development started in 2014, with the codename “Project Americas”. While the original story was completed in around 18 months by Dan Houser, Take-Two reportedly rejected it, calling it too dark for GTA 6. Later, after that, two more revisions of the story were written by Houser, but they were rejected by Take-Two as well.
After all the reboots the story went into, it turns out the final version was led by Sam Houser. The author suggests that this version of the story was approved by Take-Two in 2019. This also sites something interesting, as per the leak, the development of the game began in 2020. So it does directly line up with Take-Two’s CEO’s statement on the game’s development.
Dan Houser’s Departure
Well, since this theory dropped, it does confirm the sudden departure of Dan Houser from Rockstar Games! Houser has been involved with Rockstar since the early days; he’s one of the few known to have made the franchise into a cultural phenomenon. Seeing all this, it was indeed a shock to learn that he left Rockstar Games to start his own company.
But connecting all the dots now, it does make sense! It is safe to assume that Houser must have been frustrated after all his revisions on the script were dropped by Take-Two! Creative Freedom is important for any writer, and it might have been the major reason he got out. Houser, starting his own company, Absurd Ventures, right after his departure, explains a lot.
The statement made during Houser’s departure reads, “Dan Houser, Vice President of Creative at Rockstar Games, will leave the company.” Furthermore, it also said, “We are extremely grateful for his contribution. Rockstar Games has built some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful game worlds, a global community of passionate fans and an incredibly talented team, which remains focused on current and future projects.”
