Rockstar Games’ biggest game of all time, GTA 6, comes out next year! The hype and excitement for the game have been overwhelming so far. But at the same time, a large group of gamers are pretty disappointed. So far, Rockstar hasn’t announced anything about the release date for GTA 6 on PC. So let’s discuss why this has happened, while looking at their previous track record, and also talk about the expected release date for the game.
Previous Rockstar PC Releases
Firstly, it is important to examine the previous releases made by Rockstar Games on PC. For example, their biggest game so far, GTA 5, was released in 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. But the PC version wasn’t released during that time. PC gamers had to wait a long time, as the port was released much later, in 2015.
Another example includes Red Dead Redemption 2, the game was originally released in late October of 2018 on the PS4 and Xbox One. However, the PC version was released a year later in November 2019. On that note, did you know, it was recently reported that RDR2 next-gen is reportedly in the works? Along with a version for Nintendo Switch 2.
Similarly, the original Red Dead Redemption from 2010 was ported over from PS3 and Xbox 360 to modern consoles like PS4 and Nintendo Switch in 2023. But Rockstar did not mention anything about a PC port at launch. Until almost a year later, in 2024, when the PC port for the original game was finally announced.
Not only major games and ports, but even game updates have taken quite a while for a PC release. GTA 5 Enhanced, which introduces Ray Tracing to the game along with several other enhancements, has been available on modern consoles since 2023. But the PC version of the game took quite a while to be released; it came out just a few months back, this year.
Does Rockstar hate PC Gamers?
Well, given the track record of PC releases, most gamers assume that Rockstar does not like PC as a platform, but that’s not entirely true. The major reason behind the late release of PC has nothing to do with Rockstar being favourable towards a particular platform. More so, it is actually because porting games to PC takes time. Given the various hardware configurations developers have to work with, it becomes hard for them to optimise the game in a short time.
Previously, Rockstar has tried PC releases in a short period, but well it didn’t work out well for them. Take GTA 4, for example, released for consoles and PC in the same year, just a few months apart, it faced lots of issues. The game was plagued with performance issues and was unplayable. Even today, most users need community fixes on PC to play the game smoothly.
It is safe to say that while Rockstar does prioritise consoles for game releases, as the console market is bigger. But they don’t exactly hate the PC consumers. But instead of giving broken game releases like in the past, they like to take their time. So that they can work properly on the port, and then everything goes smoothly at launch.
GTA 6 PC Release Date
Now for the real question, when does the game come out on PC? Well, the answer isn’t exactly so straightforward. That’s because we haven’t heard any leaks or rumours about the PC release so far. Originally, it was reported that GTA 6 could be coming to PC by Early 2026. After a statement from Corsair’s CEO was made.
However, ever since the game got delayed to 2026, all these rumours have been debunked. As of now, we can only think of an estimate, based on past releases. Given that Red Dead Redemption 2 took almost a year to be ported, it is safe to assume that something similar might happen with the PC release of GTA 6, and chances are it might release in 2027 now.
