Since the inception of the franchise, the GTA games have had some top-notch characters! But have you ever wondered if we were to rank all these characters, based on their strength, who’d come on top? Well, that’s exactly what I’ve been wondering for the past few days, so I finally decided to make this list. Without wasting much time, let’s get into ranking the Top 10 strongest characters in the GTA universe.

10. Johnny Klebitz (Lost and Damned)
Starting our list, I sadly had to put Johnny from The Lost and Damned, the GTA 4 DLC, at the last place. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the character. It was so much fun to play as him in the DLC. However, since we’re ranking all the characters based on their strength, unfortunately, Johnny falls short of the other characters. While he is shown as a badass character in GTA 4’s DLC, he just dies within the first few hours of GTA 5. Not only him, but Trevor manages to completely wipe the face of his entire biker gang. Given all this, it is fair to say the weakest in our ranking would have to be Johnny!
9. Franklin Clinton (GTA 5)
This might come as a surprise to some, but I feel like Franklin is a pretty weak character. Since the start of GTA 5, he has been constantly under the shadow of Michael the entire time. He doesn’t even have an intimidating personality, because of which he gets constantly overshadowed by Trevor and Michael. Unlike the other characters, Franklin doesn’t even have any other noteworthy achievements. He doesn’t even have a lot of experience, which can be seen during missions. His skill set is not as good as the other two characters in the game.
8. Claude (GTA 3)
The first game in the 3d universe, GTA 3, is considered to be an iconic entry in the series. While Claude, the protagonist of the series, has a lot of flaws, like being a mute character throughout the game. He still has a few moments, which define his strength. While he may not be physically as strong as the other characters featured in the series. But thanks to all the missions Claude does throughout Liberty City makes he is stronger than the other characters we’ve talked about so far.
7. Huang Lee (GTA Chinatown Wars)
Unlike most other GTA games in the series, Chinatown Wars unfortunately doesn’t have a big fan base. But if you’ve played the game, then you’d know how solid Huang Lee is as a protagonist in the game. Started as a spoiled brat, the character development Lee goes through in the game is amazing. His most noteworthy achievement has to be taking down the multiple bosses towards the end of the game. His fighting skills are top-notch, and the stuff he goes through mentally definitely makes him a strong character.
6. Luis Lopez (Ballad Of Gay Tony)
Just like Lee, Luis from the Ballad of Gay Tony is also one of the most underrated characters in the franchise. Believe it or not, but when compared to most of the other characters featured in the series, Luis is one of the strongest characters in terms of physical strength. However, the only reason we still had to put him a bit below in our list is because we simply don’t get to experience the character very well through the DLC.
5. Michael De Santa (GTA 5)
Compared to other characters mentioned, Michael is one of the first to bring a lot of experience. Thanks to that, his skill sets are unmatched, while he may not be as physically strong as Trevor, his shooting skills outmatch the other characters in the game. He is also one of the oldest characters in the series, and the only family man featured in the franchise so far. However, as a character, he falls short concerning his mental health, which is very clearly visible throughout the entire game. He doesn’t have a great relationship with his family, and as a result of that, he has to see his therapist regularly.
4. Tommy Vercetti (GTA Vice City)
This list would be incomplete if we didn’t mention Tommy from GTA Vice City. While Tommy may not be the strongest character physically, given his experience and skills, he surpasses all the previously mentioned characters. Tommy’s strength can be seen across various missions spread across the game. However, his most noteworthy achievement comes towards the end of the game, at the final mission. In an hour-long sequence, Tommy gets to showcase all his physical strength, and that alone brings him further up in our ranking.
3. Trevor Phillips (GTA 5)
I know most people would have been expecting Trevor to make the top of the list. However, in all fairness, as brutal as Trevor is shown in the game, there are several other factors to be considered as well. While Trevor has done some crazy things in the game, it’s still hard to put him above the rest of the characters in the list. Aside from physical strength, Trevor isn’t the strongest character mentally, and it can be seen in many scenarios. Trevor is usually the one to attack people who are weaker than him. All in all, while Trevor is a great competitor for the title of the strongest character, however, other characters are better!
2. Carl Johnson (GTA San Andreas)
Carl Johnson, better known as CJ, is one of the most popular and loved characters in the franchise. Given all the achievements CJ can achieve, towards the end of the game, I think it’s fair to put him up here. The physical abilities of CJ are far superior to most of the other characters featured in the series. What makes him even stronger is that CJ can also put on a lot more muscle by working out, which is completely missing from other games. Not only that, but he can also learn a lot of other fighting skills later in the game.
1. Niko Bellic (GTA 4)
Without a doubt, Niko is the strongest character in the entire franchise, both physically and mentally. Niko is not a stranger to fights, as he was a former military personnel, who fought in the Yugoslav Wars. Heck, he has worked for organised crime syndicates in the past, and also has been a hired gun a few times. Given all the stuff Niko has seen in the past and the things he sees regularly as a citizen of Liberty City, he is very strong mentally, too. Out of all the characters, Niko has the best shooting skills, and that’s all because of the past military experience he carries.
