If you’ve been a Rockstar fan for a long time, then you might have heard of a game called “Agent”, which was announced back in 2009. Well, years have passed by, but people still can’t stop talking about this game, so what happened to it? Why was it never released? These are some of the questions people have been asking for years! But not anymore, as Dan Houser, ex-Rockstar Games’ Co-Founder, has recently revealed the real reason behind why Agent was cancelled. Let’s check out what he said!
What was Agent?
In case you’re a new Rockstar Games fan, then chances are you might not have even heard about Agent. Well, don’t worry, as I’ll tell you everything about the game. So, back in 2009, at the Sony E3 Conference, Rockstar Games and Sony had revealed a game known as Agent exclusively for the PlayStation 3! Back in the day, a lot of hype was generated; however, ever since then, we have never really heard anything about the game at all.
While Rockstar never officially announced anything about the game getting cancelled, however, as time passed, fans were doubtful of the game’s release. But the real shocker came in 2018, when the trademark for the game was never renewed by Rockstar. Years later, the official website for the game was also taken down. But let’s see what actually happened.
Why was Agent cancelled?
Dan Houser was recently part of the Lex Fridman Podcast, and while we got to learn a lot more about him, he also revealed the reason why Agent was cancelled. When asked if he would like to do some different types of games, he started by saying, “We worked a lot on multiple iterations of an open-world spy game, and it never came together.”
He said, “It had about five different iterations. I don’t think it works. I concluded — and I keep thinking about it sometimes, I sometimes lie in bed thinking about it — and I’ve concluded that what makes them really good as film stories makes them not work as video games. Or we need to think through how to do it in a different way as a video game”.
While Agent was originally announced as a game set in the 1970s Cold War, Houser reveals that there were many versions of the game. “There was another one that was set in the current… we had so many different versions of this game, we worked with so many different teams.” We also learned about the eventual death of Agent.
Dan Houser said that Agent was ultimately cancelled as half of Rockstar Games was busy making GTA 4’s DLC, while the other half was busy with GTA 5. So he said, “It became clear that (Agent) was going to be too much of a distraction for us and we ditched it. I think it was handed over to another company within Rockstar but never got completed.”
