The popular mod project that brought GTA 4’s map to GTA 5, ‘Liberty City Preservation Project,’ was shut down by Rockstar Games about a month ago. The project had been in development for over 6 years, and it was a shocker to find out that Rockstar had shut down the project. However, today there was an update regarding the project, and there is a chance that the project could come back. Let’s see what’s up with the mod project!
‘Liberty City Preservation Project’ May Still Be Alive
Initially, there were a few reports that the project was shut down by Rockstar. As the lead modder, nkjellman, announced in a Discord post, “Due to the unexpected attention that our project received and after speaking with Rockstar Games, we have decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation project. We appreciate all the support the project has received, and we look forward to continuing to pursue our passion for modding the Grand Theft Auto series.”
However, today, popular Twitter user @videotechuk_ reported that there has been an update regarding this situation. According to the lead modder, the project may not have been legitimately taken down by Rockstar. He made a post on Discord regarding the same. We’ve attached an image of the post; you can see what he had to say regarding the situation.
To summarise the post, what happened was someone from Rockstar Games contacted the modding team and asked them to take down the mod. After the mod was removed, it was seen that FiveM was filled with dozens of Liberty City servers. These servers are streaming the entire map, with props from GTA 4. Not only that, but they also had bug fixes and lighting fixes, similar to those of the mod project. These are paid mods that are available on FiveM, so they’re making money off of it too.
Further details of the FiveM servers were revealed today when the Fall of FiveM website was revealed. According to the website, The Liberty City Project was been taken down by some strangers who represented themselves as “FiveM team members” and were participating in taking down the mod. The website says that if it had been Rockstar doing the negotiations, it would have ended with a DMCA takedown.
While the official modders of the project have not said anything as of now, it looks like the project could come back, as Rockstar hasn’t officially taken down the project. In any case, we will give an update regarding this situation if there are any other developments made!
If you didn’t know about the project, the mod featured the entire map of Liberty City in GTA 5. It had the complete feel of Liberty City; it included pedestrians, weather, and a few other things from GTA 4. Not only that, but it also featured some improvements to the lighting. There were a few options users could select with the textures too. All in all, it was a very big project!
